SHAMIK SANYAL

Shamik Sanyal is a Filmmaker and Cinematographer working in the Documentary and Natural history space. Based in India and originally from Jalpaiguri, a town at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, his early connection with the natural world continues to inform his visual storytelling.
 

Shamik focuses on science-led narratives and climate justice documentaries, often working at the intersection of ecology, culture, and social change. His body of work spans a wide range of projects from climate and social justice documentaries to wildlife shows, adventure sports films, and branded content for clients such as Disney+ Hotstar, Discovery Network, Euronews, The Quint, Salt Media, the Zoological Survey of India, and the National Mission for Himalayan Studies.
 

He is adept at working in remote and lesser-documented landscapes, from filming the elusive snow leopards in Spiti Valley to following the newly described Sela Macaque in Arunachal Pradesh. His current film Vanishing River, which explores the impact of dams and climate change on the Teesta River ecosystem, was selected for the Green Stories Pitch 2024 and is currently in production.
 

Shamik is also a NEWF Fellow, and his work has been featured in the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival’s New Work Showcase. Beyond filmmaking, he is skilled in color grading, data management, and archival workflows. As a still photographer, his works have appeared in Sanctuary Asia, Nature in Focus, National Geographic India, and scientific publications such as Nature.com.
 

Through his films and photography, Shamik aims to amplify lesser-heard voices, whether they belong to people, places, or species while advocating for a more just and ecologically conscious world.
